Homes have all sorts of information that could potentially be used to make living there more comfortable, easier, and more efficient. One of the most common IoT devices monitors temperature and its regulation. Others involve security, energy/water consumption, and maintenance.
- Säkerhet (t.ex. alarm).
- Ström- och vattenförbrukning.
What are some other things in the home that a homeowner might want to know about?
The smart home is not limited to things inside the home. Some owners would find it useful to know:
- if a package has arrived
- if their lawn is in need of watering
- if their pets have wandered off
- if their bird feeder is empty
Refer to CTC IoT Teacher Guide #3.
Our home
For the next exercise, we will make a simulation of a smart home with devices that can be activated remotely through the Internet. Each group will control one smart home device.
There will be one central Home Yún that will be connected to the house. It will read the home temperature and receive commands on whether or not to activate the connected devices.
We will make use of two Arduino Yúns:
- One central Yún to measures the temperature in our home, and that can receive requests to shut down or activate the objects it is connected to.
- One Yún per group that shows the temperature through RGB lamps, and has a push button to send commands to the cental control Yún, to activate or deactivate a device.
RGB values:
Blue – under 10º C
White – between 10º C and 20º C
Red – over 20º C
